Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY): Providing Clean Fuel and Targeted Subsidy
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched in May 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), is a flagship social welfare scheme aimed at making clean cooking fuel like LPG available to rural and deprived households across India.
Key Benefits of PMUY (Ujjwala Yojana)
The scheme offers significant benefits, particularly to eligible women from poor households:
Free LPG Connection:
The scheme provides deposit-free LPG connections to beneficiaries.
4 The Government of India provides financial support of ₹1600 for a 14.2 kg cylinder connection or ₹1150 for a 5 kg cylinder connection, which covers the security deposit, pressure regulator, hose, domestic gas consumer card, and installation charges.
5
Free First Refill and Stove (Ujjwala 2.0):
Under the current phase, Ujjwala 2.0, all PMUY beneficiaries are provided with the first LPG refill and stove (hotplate) free of cost along with their deposit-free connection.
6
Targeted Refill Subsidy (Currently ₹300):
To ensure the sustained usage of LPG, the Government provides a targeted subsidy on refills, which is credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account (DBT).
7 The current targeted subsidy is ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder (and proportionately pro-rated for 5 kg connections).
8 This subsidy is available for up to 12 refills per year and has been extended for the financial year 2024-25.9
Note on ₹352 Subsidy:
As per the latest government announcements and press releases (up to the current time), the targeted subsidy for PMUY beneficiaries is ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder.10 While the effective price of an LPG cylinder for an Ujjwala beneficiary is often significantly lower than the market price, the specific, fixed subsidy amount currently approved by the Union Cabinet and credited to beneficiaries' accounts is ₹300.11 The total benefit a beneficiary receives may vary based on market price fluctuations, but the fixed targeted subsidy amount is ₹300.12
